Jazz With the Stars - InterviewsWhen great jazz performers come to the Eastern Iowa area, they often spend some time with the staff of KCCK. In our studio, backstage or over the phone, we talk with many jazz veterans, as well as the rising stars of the genre. Here you can find out what's behind the music that is performed in our area, and played on KCCK. She talked with Bob Stewart by phone from St. Louis, where she was appearing before coming to Cedar Rapids, about her early career and what she's been up to lately.
Sonny Fortune with Bob Stewart - November 2007 Saxophonist Sonny Fortune performed with the Kirkwood Jazz Ensemble and C.R. Jazz Big Band Nov. 10, 2007. He talked in studio about starting his own record label and his experiences with Miles Davis.

Frankie Manning with Murray Kent - September 2007 Legendary Swing era dancer Frankie Manning was in Fairfield, Iowa over the Labor Day weekend to talk about his recent book and to conduct several Lindy Hop workshops. The 93-year-old spoke by phone from his home in New York with KCCK's Murray Kent.

Ben Allison and Ron Horton with Bob Stewart - March 2007 Bassist Ben Allison and trumpeter Ron Horton performed at several venues around eastern Iowa in March 2007. They also sat down in the KCCK studios with Bob Stewart. Allison talked about how he got started playing the bass and how he came up with song titles for his Cowboy Justice CD. Horton talked about the influence of New Orleans trumpeter Al Hirt on his career.

Marian McPartland with Bob Stewart - September 2005 Marian McPartland has been a giant of jazz for more than six decades. From her legendary 1950s trio at the Hickory House on New York's famed 52nd Street to her 25 years as host of NPR's longest-running cultural program, "Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz", she has thrilled jazz fans with her prodigious gifts as an improviser, interpreter and composer. She performed at Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City in September 2005 and talked with KCCK's Bob Stewart ahead of time.

Mike Vax with Bob Stewart - February 2004 Trumpeter Mike Vax performed at Coe College's 2004 Jazz Summit in February. Vax is a Yamaha International performing artist and clinician in both classical and jazz music. He has served as the lead trumpet for the Stan Kenton Orchestra and has performed on more than 50 albums with many acclaimed musicians including Kenton, Clark Terry, Buddy DeFranco, and Anita O'Day. He talked with Bob Stewart about his career and about the future of jazz education.
David Sanborn with Bob Stewart - January 2004 David Sanborn has been the most influential saxophonist on pop, R&B, and crossover players of the past 20 years. He was in Iowa in January 2004 for concerts in Des Moines and Davenport. Before those appearances he talked with KCCK's Bob Stewart.
