MUSIC PROGRAMS

Jazz Programming on KCCK:

All of the producers at KCCK have a special touch mixing jazz. You'll hear contemporary jazz artists such as David Sanborn, Andy Narell and Lee Ritenour, as well as traditional jazz masters like Dexter Gordon, Duke Ellington and Count Basie.

Back Stage Blues:

An hour of the best in live blues music hosted by John Heim aka Big Moe. Your favorite blues acts recorded on stage from all over the world. Friday at 10 p.m.

Beale Street Caravan:

Hosted by Pat Mitchell of the Blues Foundation, this weekly show takes listeners to exciting live blues events, such as the W.C. Handy Blues Awards, the Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland, and the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival. Audiences are also taken inside some of the country's famous and not-so-famous blues clubs, including B.B. King's Blues Club. Saturday at 1 a.m. Visit the Beale Street Caravan web site.

Big Band Memories:

Two hosts with familiar names and voices, Cary J. Hahn and Murray Kent, provide soft jazz and big band sounds every weekend. Hahn is best-known to area television viewers as the "Iowa Traveler" on KGAN CBS-2, where he presented human-interest stories and features for about two decades. Kent is a radio veteran and a former classic and vintage jazz program host on KCCK in the 1980s. Sunday 1-5 p.m.

Brazilian Hour:

Hosted by Sergio Mielniczenko, Brazilian Hour is made possible by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, and promotes the best Brazilian music and culture all around the world. Tuesday and Sunday at 2 a.m. Visit the Brazilian Hour web site.

Café Jazz:

Featuring the smooth groove of today's jazz hosted by Ted Hasiuk. Ted first became exposed to smooth jazz while traveling in the U.S. back in the late 80's. It was love at first listen. After several years of compiling a smooth jazz library, which has evolved into the largest in Canada, Ted took to the airwaves to spread the word. Saturday at 5 a.m. Visit the Café Jazz web site.

The Crawfish Circuit:

Bob De Forest plays some of the blues and jazz of the New Orleans to Austin circuits. Saturday at 10 p.m.

KCCK's Culture Crawl:

Every week on Thursday and Friday mornings, Dennis Green and Bob Stewart take a look at what's happening in Iowa's Cultural Corridor on KCCK's Culture Crawl. Each episode provides an in-depth look at one upcoming arts event, usually including a personal interview with an organizer or performer, and concludes with highlights of KCCK's Concert Calendar for the coming weekend. It's one of the best ways to plan your weekend in Eastern Iowa, and it's only on KCCK.

Da Blues:

Your host Bob De Forest examines different styles of blues, from boogie woogie to the rock blues of today. Saturday at 6 p.m.

Da Friday Night Blues:

A night of the best in blues music hosted by John Heim aka Big Moe. Fridays 6-10 p.m.

Earthsongs:

This weekly, hour-long music program highlights and examines contemporary music being produced by contemporary Native American artists such as Robbie Robertson, Indigenous, Joanne Shenandoah, Lunar Drive, Walela and Robert Mirabal. Each show is built around a main theme -- or showcases a particular artist -- complete with interviews. Monday at 1 a.m. Visit the Earthsongs web site.

Echoes:

John Diliberto is your host for an hour of exotic instrumental sounds. You'll hear music and features from some of the most creative contemporary composers of today. Artists range in style from Philip Glass and Brian Eno to John Tesh and Yanni. Sunday at 10 p.m. Visit the Echoes web site.

Funk at Five:

Gordon Paulsen puts some funk into the drive home every day. Funk at Five features the great R & B, funk and horn bands that bridge the gap between blues and jazz. Weekdays at 5 p.m.

Gentle Jazz:

Bob Naujoks and Ron Adkins serve up a balance of light jazz perfect for your Sunday morning activities. Program originator Naujoks hosts from 9-11 a.m., Adkins anchors 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Jazz Corner of The World:

Craig Kessler showcases a wide variety of artists and styles and shows how they connect to each other and the larger jazz world such as the Art Blakey album that inspired the show's name. Saturday at 2 p.m.

Jazz at Lincoln Center:

This weekly series explodes with captivating sounds of real swing, real blues and real jazz recorded as part of the Lincoln Center jazz performance series. The concerts put together by Jazz at Lincoln Center Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis are hosted by the late CBS News 60 Minutes Correspondent Ed Bradley. Jazz Masters:

Bob Stewart and John Heim play an hour of classic jazz recordings in the mainstream tradition. You'll hear landmark recordings and historic concerts. Jazz Masters features artists such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, and Stan Getz. Monday through Saturday at noon and Monday through Thursday at 10 p.m.

Jazz Profiles:

This continuing documentary series profiles the people, places and events in jazz. Topics range from in-depth portraits of the legendary personalities who have made jazz what it is today to comprehensive looks at jazz instruments, jazz cities and jazz families. By using archival recordings, interviews and narration, Jazz Profiles tells informative and engaging stories that celebrate the music and the people who make it. Jazz Rhythm:

Music and story-telling brought together in a one-hour series blending commentary, interview clips and jazz recordings old and new. Piano Jazz hits a perfect balance between historical perspective and sheer entertainment, a formula that has made the series the longest-running national performance program on public radio. The program features interviews with world-class music makers such as Los Lobos, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Osborne, and Taj Mahal. Radio Deluxe with John Pizzarelli:

Rhythm Sweet and Hot:

This 60-minute musical variety show is a revelation to young listeners and a joyful rediscovery for older ones. Original jazz and swing recordings set the tone. Musical treats and surprises include vocal and "sweet" band recordings from the 78 rpm era; rare, original-issue 78s; long out-of-print LPs; original transcriptions; and new recordings that revive older styles. Iowa City Jazz Festival:

KCCKwill once again provide live coverge of all the mainstage performers at the 2009 Toyota-Scion of Iowa City Jazz Festival plus exclusive backstage interviews. Dave Holland, Bill Frisell, David Sanchez, Chris Potter, Trombone Shorty (pictured) and Lionel Loueke will headline the 2009 Jazz Festival July 3,4 and 5 on the University of Iowa Pentacrest. This year's festival features local, regional, national and international jazz musicians and will include four stages, a culinary row with food from around the world and artists displaying their works in a mini-art fair. All activities are free and open to the public. See the entire lineup.
