After six volumes of Terry Gibbs’ 1959 Dream Band recordings were released in the ‘80s and ‘90s, the last thing Terry expected was to discover a 7th volume. But that’s indeed what happened last year when his son Gerry stumbled across a file marked “Party 1959” on the computer where Terry had digitally stored all the surviving tapes. Arranged by Bill Holman and Marty Paich, “Vol. 7: The Lost Tapes 1959” is being released to coincide with the leader’s 100th birthday on October 13.

Pianist/composer Christian Sands’ new album, “Embracing Dawn,” serves as a cinematic narration of healing and triumph, reflecting Sands’ personal experience while offering a guide for anyone who has experienced loss of any kind. The disc explores musical styles as varied as neo- and alternative soul, mid-tempo swing, funky gospel, ballads, acoustic jazz-rock, and trap-style beats, and features collaborations with bassist Yasushi Nakamura, drummer Ryan Sands, guitarist Marvin Sewell, vibraphonist Warren Wolf, and harmonica player Gregoire Maret.

Also this week, Grammy-winning Delfeayo Marsalis and his Uptown Jazz Orchestra celebrate hometown New Orleans heroes with the spirited “Crescent City Jewels”; pianist Misha Tsiganov convenes an extraordinarily accomplished ensemble for his new release, “Painter of Dream,” including saxophonists Chris Potter and Miguel Zenon, trumpeter Alex Sipiagin, and drummer Johnathan Blake; and pianist Art Hirahara creates an intimate trio setting with guitarist Paul Bollenback and trumpeter Ron Horton for “Good Company.”
