Culture Crawl 958 “Stupid in the Best Way”

“The Merry Wives of Windsor” is one of Shakespeare’s lesser-known plays, but one that features one of his best-known characters, the beer-swilling, womanizing rapscallion Falstaff. Crooked Path Theatre’s Patrick DuLaney says legend has it the play was written in just a couple weeks, after Queen Elizabeth told the playwright she wanted to see Falstaff in a love story.

Jason Alberty portrays the lascivious but surprisingly charming Falstaff in a comedy Patrick calls “the world’s first sitcom.” Joining Jason is a cast that is a Who’s Who of well-known players from both Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.

Aug. 23-Sept. 1 at The James Theatre. Tickets and info at thejamesic.com and crookedpaththeatre.com.
