We are sad to learn of the passing of Cary J. Hahn, a true broadcasting legend and music fan. Cary was known to most of Iowa from his work in television. As KGAN’s Iowa Traveler, he roamed the state interviewing quirky people and sharing unique stories. After leaving KGAN, he was news director and morning news anchor at KMRY.
But it was at KCCK that Cary was able to follow his true passion, big band and swing music. He was a noted fan and expert on the live and music Glenn Miller. He was a regular attendee and MC at the annual Glenn Miller Festival in Clarinda, where that legendary bandleader was born. he and his wife Jean made many trips to New Orleans, where he loved to haunt the many festivals and clubs in the birthplace of jazz.
On KCCK, he hosted Big Band Memories for nearly twenty years, and used his talent with words to tell us the stories behind the biggest legends of the Big Band era while he spun their music.
Cary will be deeply missed by everyone who remembers his big smile, genuine enjoyment of people with interesting stories to tell, and, of course, those who shared his love of music.
