Who can come to camp?
Camp is open to any student entering grades 6-9 who is either in band or has at least one year of private lessons.
Guitar and Bass players as well as piano students who participate in their school music programs are also encouraged to attend.
If you have questions about whether jazz camp will be a good fit for your child, talk to your band director, private lessons teacher or contact Mrs. Shanley at valshanley@gmail.com.
What happens at camp?
Sessions are offered for brass, woodwinds and the rhythm section in:
- Theory
- Big Band
- Sectionals
- Private Lessons
- Improvisation
- Combo
- Jazz Listening
My child plays an instrument not usually associated with jazz band (flute, baritone, clarinet, etc.)
Any student interested in improving his or her technique will benefit from camp. Jazz Band Camp may be especially helpful if there is no jazz band at school, to help students prepare for high school jazz band. Students who play non-traditional jazz instruments can benefit, and are welcome as well.
What does the tuition cover?
Tuition covers all classes, teaching materials, camp t-shirt, Camp water bottle and daily snacks.
Who teaches at the camp?
Our camp faculty pairs professional jazz musicians with expert middle school music teachers. We also have college-age teaching assistants. The camp is directed by Val Shanley, who has nearly two decades experience teaching music to this age group.
What is the daily schedule?
Morning session is 8:30am – 12pm noon, Monday through Friday, and the Afternoon session is 1:00pm to 4:30pm. To assist working parents, we offer supervision from 8:00am – 8:30am and 4:30pm – 5pm.
My student can’t be there for the whole week (previously-planned vacation, etc).
If your student really wants to attend camp, but has to be gone for a day, we should be able to accommodate you. Much more than that and you probably won’t be getting the full benefit of your tuition. Contact us so we can talk about your individual situation.
Are there scholarships available?
Yes. Information at this link.
What happens after I register?
You’ll receive an email form to complete online. This link will have the information you need to complete on your student as well as release forms that need to be completed before camp begins, including how to contact parents, your child’s instrument and experience level, photo releases, etc.
My question is not answered here.
