Vocal Short List 16: Rita Reys 

Though raised in a classical music-loving family, Dutch singer Rita Reys  switched to jazz when she met her first husband, drummer Wessel Ilcken. The two formed a group and toured Europe. Dubbed “Europe’s First Lady of Jazz,” Reys was invited to the United States in 1956 by Columbia records and was backed by the Jazz Messengers on her first recording.

The Wednesday Night Special listens back to a hot summer night in 2016, when Poncho Sanchez brought his Latin Jazz Band to the Iowa City Jazz Festival. The Grammy Award-winning master conguero brought his signature blend of bebop and Afro-Cuban styles to the main stage on the UI Pentacrest.

Getting To Know Jazzmeia Horn

Jazzmeia Horn is a relative newcomer making her mark in the jazz-vocal tradition. She recently took first prize at the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition and released her debut album, A Social Call, last year. Jazzmeia has been called, “a singer of ironclad capability, creative drive, and irrepressible panache.”
