Well-known in British and European jazz circles but not in the States, clarinetist Tony Coe began his career with the noted mainstream trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton, and has been a mainstay with the bands of Johnny Dankworth and Francy Boland. As a first-call musician, he has backed up such jazz luminaries as Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Bob Brookmeyer, Jimmy Rushing, Paul McCartney and Carmen McRae.

Herbie Hancock’s “Headhunters Era”

After four shows spotlighting the “Mwandishi Era” of Herbie’s music (’69 – ’73), Craig now moves to the next phase of Hancock’s career, the “Headhunters Era” … named for the huge commercial 1973 hit record of the same name.  We’ll hear some great funky fare from the years 1973 – 1975.  Don’t miss it!

Renee Rosnes has seen her share of jazz supergroups. Thirty years ago, she held down the piano chair with Out of the Blue, a youthful all-star crew formed by Blue Note Records. She was a charter member of the SFJAZZ Collective. Now, for Artemis, Rosnes enlisted trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, clarinetist Anat Cohen, tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana, drummer Allison Miller, bassist Noriko Ueda, and vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant.
