This week on the Short List is the Iowa born and raised saxophonist Dick Oatts. His career has taken him all over the world, first with the renowned Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, and then as a soloist with many of the great European bands. He was a key member of the light jazz-fusion band, Flim & the BBs in the 1980s, then became a sought-after session player.

Tribute to Chick Corea, Part 2 

In this second tribute show, covering September,1968 to July 1969, Craig spins more of his favorites from the keyboard artistry of Chick Corea. We’ll hear some of Chick’s own bands and a bunch of work with one of Chick’s all-time heroes, Miles Davis. This music is surely the backbone of modern jazz from the 1960s and 1970s. Don’t miss it!!

This week, the Wednesday Night Special begins a celebration of jazz and the spoken word during National Poetry Month. Up first is the Jane Ira Bloom Quartet, whose most recent album, Wild Lines, incorporated Bloom’s music with the poetry of Emily Dickenson. We’ll listen to her 2018 gig in the City of Literature at the Iowa City Jazz Festival.

This week, Craig presents some astounding examples of fantastic music from this unique pianist and composer. We’ll hear from several of Freddie’s own releases (including his 3 Blue Note records), as well as a number of other releases from the likes of Gene Ammons, Art Farmer, Tiny Grimes, Joe Roland, and others. This is another underrated jazz artist who is often overlooked!
