Remembering John Rapson
This week on the Wednesday Night Special, we pay tribute to beloved musician, educator, composer, and great friend of jazz, Ira “John” Rapson, who passed away on July 21st. Rapson established the BA and Master’s degrees in jazz studies at the University of Iowa. His critically-acclaimed compositions include the groundbreaking Hot Tamale Louie, which was performed on the main stage at the 2018 Iowa City Jazz Festival.

Host Christian McBride hangs with award-winning blues singer Shemekia Copeland. While Copeland has always been socially conscious, she has taken her activism in a most positive and creative direction. As she explains, she writes to “bring blues lyrics into the 21st century,” by singing not only about the problems, but also offering solutions.
