The KCCK Featured Album for November is “No More Apologies” from saxophonist Damani Phillips, who directs the Jazz Studies Program at the University of Iowa. There are limits in working with a string section in a jazz context and the musical directions that can be explored. A twist of fate brought Damani together with a string ensemble with a uniquely refined understanding of Black music which allowed his arrangements to flourish. With the help of a stellar rhythm section, Dr. Phillips realizes a longstanding musical dream project that embraces the power and reach of music that grooves hard while remaining down to earth. “No More Apologies” is on Open Mind Records.
