Iowa playwright Mary Swander’s new work “Squatters on Red Earth” tells the story of the unique relationship between the Mesqwaki nation and the Inspirationists, the original settlers in the Amana Colonies. The two groups mingled and supported each other, so much so that years later, when the Mesqwaki wanted to return to their homeland in Iowa, it was the Inspirationists who helped them purchase the land.
The tale is told through a unique combination of narration, music, and puppetry that will involve students at Meskwaki High School.
Free performances June 9 at the Amana Performing Arts Center in Amana, and June 10 at 2:00 and 7:00pm in the Wieting Theatre in Toledo.
