Culture Crawl 842 “Wow. Ok. Iowa…Cool”

Mike Conrad was first inspired to become a jazz composer during his undergrad years at UNI, working under well-known composers (and performers) Bob Washut and Chris Merz. Today, as a UNI jazz faculty member himself, he continues that tradition, working with a third “generation” of jazz composing students at the University, as well as winning some prestigious awards for his own work.

He shows off their work as well as his own, in an all-star big band called The Iowa Jazz Composers Orchestra, which exclusively showcases the work of Iowa composers. The ICJO leads off KCCK’s Jazz Under The Stars on August 3rd at Noelridge Park. We also kick off our Young Artists Series with the Ana Koch Quartet.

The music begins at 6:30pm, with food trucks, KCCK merch, and a playground nearby for the kids.
