The Short List: Vocal Short List 14 (Sachal Vasandani)

Sachal Vasandani at the 2013 Iowa City Jazz Festival

Sachal Vasandani at the 2013 Iowa City Jazz Festival

The Short List this week brings you a new voice—one in the making during the last decade. It is the instrument of Sachal Vasandani who can croon with the best of them, but chooses to push the boundaries between jazz and pop. Sachal comes from a home where a variety of music was played, including traditional music of India. His 2015 album Slow Motion Miracles features original songs and electronic effects that might appeal to a contemporary audience, though he has done the big band thing and worked with Wynton Marsalis, Chris Botti and Bobby McFerrin.

Nat Adderley: Brotherly Swing NA2

Nat Adderly was a fine trumpet player. But he spent most of his career in the shadow of his older brother, Julian “Cannonball” Adderly. Nat ran the band business and wrote many of their hits. When Cannonball died, Nat carried on, not only with the band, but also with the family tradition of educating the next generation.

Donald Harrison Jr.

Donald Harrison Jr.

In this special episode of NEW ORLEANS CALLING, we celebrate our second year on the air with a look back at some highlights from the last twelve months.

A theme that kept appearing all this year in host George Ingmire’s interviews has been the special relationship between teachers and students in New Orleans music – and for this program we’ve drawn together the stories of a number of different musicians, connected through the bonds of mentorship. Alvin Batiste, Harold Battiste, Donald Harrison Jr, and Gregory Agid are all examples of this powerful tradition in Crescent City culture.
