This week features Bob Washut, who was Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Northern Iowa for 22 years. Under his leadership, the UNI Jazz Band One performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival 3 times. Washut is also a founding member of the “Salsa Band,” Orquesta Alto Maiz. As a pianist, Washut has played and recorded with several outstanding musicians, like Ryan Kisor and Bobby Shew. Hear the stories and sounds that can only come from Iowa!

Craig celebrates what would have been Gene’s 93rd birthday by presenting some astonishing examples of top-flight tenor sax. Eugene “Jug” Ammons’ life was cut short by cancer and other problems, but he still had a fruitful 31-year recording career, working with masters like John Coltrane, Sonny Stitt, Jack McDuff, Lou Donaldson, and many other jazz giants. Tune in for 4 hours of first-rate soulful jazz!

April is Jazz Appreciation Month, where we shine the spotlight on all the great jazz produced by our high school and college ensembles. Tonight, we present The U of I Latin Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of James Dreier. The Latin Jazz Ensemble 10 to 15 student musicians study and perform the Caribbean and South America. James Dreier is a founding member of the legendary “Salsa Band,” Orquesta Alto Maiz, and an Afro-Cuban drum virtuoso. Join us for a hot night of Latin jazz, recorded in 2017!

Guitar icon John Scofield is a one-of-a-kind virtuoso known for his blend of jazz, funk, rock, R&B, and soul. Scofield adds new insights to two of his most revered albums, exploring them for the first time since their original release. The first is 1986’s Blue Matter, one of his first releases after leaving Miles Davis’ group. The second album is 1996’s Quiet, featuring Scofield on classical nylon guitar in a departure from his electric guitar wizardry.

Craig celebrates what would have been Blue Note Records founder and owner, Alfred Lion’s 110th birthday, by ‘dropping the needle’ onto some of the finest modern jazz records ever made! We’ll hear classic Blue Note releases from 60 years ago from the likes of Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Horace Silver, Cannonball Adderley, Jimmy Smith, and so many others. This is the stuff!!
