The Short List this week features pianist Bill Charlap as Bob continues his “Cats On the Key Four” series. Bill Charlap has been on the jazz scene for over two decades He formed his trio – with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington – and together they recently released a 20th anniversary CD, Uptown Downton. One critic remarked that, “this must be one of the best piano trios ever.” Listen to the Short List and hear the light, firm touch of Bill Charlap – one of the premiere pianists in jazz today.

Jimmy Witherspoon: Shouting The Blues

Blues singer Jimmy Witherspoon had a deep, smoky voice and recorded dozens of albums and fronted bands and orchestras. Throughout his career, “Spoon” managed to span the worlds of blues, R&B and jazz with his deep baritone and unique style. His collaborators ranged from Count Basie to Eric Burdon, Gerry Mulligan to Van Morrison, and T-Bone Walker to Robben Ford.

Gabe Medd Homecoming “Appetizer”

Trumpeter Gabe Medd returns to eastern Iowa for KCCK’s special Homecoming concert on Saturday, November 4th at the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts. We thought we’d whet your appetite for this show by sampling two of his earlier performances. First up on the menu is Gabe’s 2008 appearance at Jazz Under The Stars. Then, stay tuned for a side dish of Gabe Medd in concert with the Kirkwood Community College Jazz Ensemble at the Coralville Center. It’s a double helping that will leave you hungry for more, so make plans to join us on November 4th for the main course!

Joe Temperley at Jazz at Lincoln Center Joe Temperley, long-time baritone saxophonist for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra died May 11, 2016, at the age of 86. Temperley was born in Scotland but moved to London and then America. He went on to play with Duke Ellington and nearly all the great big bands in jazz. This episode of Jazz Night In America tells Temperley’s life story, and samples many of his own compositions. You’ll also hear new arrangements of his favorite Ellington tunes.

Craig spins a tasty variety of jazz gems from this classy label founded in 1996.  Artists include Kenny Barron, JD Allen, Mike Ledonne, Eric Reed, Reuben Wilson, and many other present-day jazz masters!
