- Give students the opportunity to learn from, and play alongside jazz teachers and educators, as well as professional musicians from the community.
The camp is lead by experienced faculty, whose teaching experience ranges from middle school to college Sessions are offered for brass, woodwinds, and rhythm section, in Theory, Improvisation, Big Band, Combo, sectionals, jazz listening and private lessons. The camp is held at Kirkwood Community College, one of the nation’s leading community colleges. Kirkwood instrumental and vocal jazz groups have been invited to perform at the North Sea Jazz Festival, International Association of Jazz Educators Conference and other prestigious jazz festivals around the United States. Tuition is $299 and includes all classes, teaching materials, a Jazz Camp T-Shirt and CD of the final concert. A meal plan is available. Scholarships are awarded to students who would not otherwise be able to attend camp without tuition help. Most scholarships are for one-half tuition ($149). After registering
- You will receive an information packet in the mail, which will include details on audition materials, meal plan, and other helpful information. Also there will be an information sheet to send back to tell us more about your child and their band experience. This will help us in setting up curriculum and orient faculty.
- On your first day of camp, students will audition for one of the teachers. The function of the audition is to help us find out what skills they already have, and which skills we can work on at camp. It will also help us assign music that is the proper level for you. So there’s nothing to be nervous about – just show us what you can do!
- Print off and practice the audition piece for your instrument. If you intend to play more than one instrument at camp, print and practice each piece. The link for audition materials is at the top of this page.
