Tribute to Ahmad Jamal

Craig salutes the life and career of recently departed pianist  Ahmad Jamal. We’ll hear some recordings that caused the great Miles Davis to name Jamal one of the trumpeter’s main influences in modern jazz. Jamal, who passed away at age 92, had a brilliant career that spanned 70 years.

We’ll also mark the recording anniversaries of Miles Davis’ “Miles Ahead” (1956), Dexter Gordon’s “Dexter Calling” (1961), Art Farmer’s “The Summer Knows” (1976), Chet Baker’s “Chet in Chicago” (1986), Irene Reid’s “Movin’ Out” (1999), The Flying Horse Big Band’s “Florida Rays” (2019) and many others 10am to 2pm, Monday thru Friday, with Jazz Masters at noon.

Building on a long track record of scholarship and interpretive artistry focused on the great Mary Lou Williams, vibraphonist and composer Cecilia Smith unveils “The Mary Lou Williams Resurgence Project Volume One: Small Ensemble Repertoire.” Through countless hours of immersion in the Williams archive at the Institute for Jazz Studies, and direct access to manuscripts and scores from Williams’ former manager Father Peter O’Brien, Smith and her top-tier bandmates put their unique stamp on music either composed by Williams, composed in honor of her, or arranged and recorded by Williams during her lifetime.

 

 

 

 

 

Emotive, cinematic break-beat trio GoGo Penguin are back with their brand new album, “Everything is going to Be OK.” Bursting with the optimism of new beginnings, with a new drummer, and a subtly updated and developed sound, the band is ushering in a more sonically liberated era. Hailing from Manchester, UK, the band comprises pianist Chris Illingworth, bassist Nick Blacka and drummer Jon Scott. The band first rocketed to fame when their sophomore album was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize before recording three albums for Blue Note Records.

 

 

 

 

 

 

                                      

Also this week, tenor saxophonist Ken Fowser releases his sixth album as a leader, “Resolution,” an inspired eight song collection featuring trumpeter Jeremy Pelt and guitarist Peter Bernstein;

 

 

 

 

 

 

               

“Truth Be Told” is vocalist/songwriter Angie Wells’ diverse musical journey through various truths in her life;

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

       

and Rising Star vibraphonist Behn Gillece strikes and effortless and joyous balance between sound, silence and rhythm for his sixth installment as leader for Posi-Tone Records “Between the Bars.”

 

 

 

 

“I Do Love My Triplets” – Prairie Guest Djs 2023

Go Benesh, Camden  Beightler, and Noah Reu have been involved with KCCK since middle school. Each came to Jazz Band Camp multiple times, and once they reached high school, got to work with several guests artists in The Corridor Jazz Project with Prairie Jazz Band One. Their jazz band memories include one scary car ride, and a lot of fun in the band room. In addition to some hilarious stories, we heard music from The Black-Eyed Peas with Sergio Mendes (a KCCK first!), Johnny Hodges, Paul Desmond, Satchmo, and more.

Culture Crawl 812 “There Was Homework”

TKM Theatrical Productions presents Neil Simon’s “I Oughta Be In Pictures” May 5-7 at the Amana Performing Arts Center. It’s the story of the relationship between a Hollywood screenwriter and the daughter he left behind as a toddler, who has now searched him out.

The play is Neil Simon at his finest, rapid-fire one-liners with just the right amount of emotion and pathos to pack a punch.

Culture Crawl 811 “Management Could Have Tripled The Price”

Orchestra Iowa goes Latin this week with “Havana Nights,” featuring singer Camila Zamora and the legendary Mambo Kings, with a program that will range from Spanish arias to “One Como Va” and the Beatles.

Tim Hankewich says this kind of show is a bit of a stretch for the orchestra, but will really show off their musical chops.

KCCK’s Featured Album for May 2023

The KCCK Featured Album for May is “Dig It!” from 3 Dawgs and a Bone. This is the debut recording for this Eastern Iowa ensemble, who have been performing together since 2015. The lineup includes guitarist Steve Grismore and drummer James Dreier, both retired jazz faculty from the University of Iowa; and trombonist Rich Medd, the former director of the jazz program at Iowa City West High School. The new disc features original compositions as well as fresh takes of tunes by Ellington, Monk, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Nichols and Dave Holland.  Purchase
