Culture Crawl 1094 “Hiding in the Bass Drum”

Ghanian drummer and composer Paa Kow chats with Dennis over the phone ahead of another “One World” music series concerts put on by Natural Talent Music.

It’s 7:30pm Sat, Aug 9 at The James Theater. Paa Kow will have an 8 piece band performing a fusion of jazz and afro-pop. Parranderos Latin Combo will also take the stage.

Culture Crawl 1093 “Back Into the Elements”

It’s week 7 of the Cedar Rapids Muni Band season and Steve Shanley is here with the details. The band will be in Ellis Park on Wed, Jul 16, and in Bever Park on Sun, Jul 20. Music begins at 7:30pm.

Shanley is also at KCCK’s Jazz Band Camp this week with performances on Fri, Jul 18 at 10:45am & 3:30pm @Ballantyne Auditorium.

Celebrated pianist, composer, arranger, conductor and two-time Grammy Award winner Alan Broadbent unveils his fourth release for Savant Records, “Threads of Time.” Known for his many collaborations with luminaries such as Pat Metheny, Sheila Jordan and Michael Buble, Broadbent brings all that impressive experience to this deeply personal project. The recording is especially notable as every composition on the album was penned by Broadbent himself—displaying his gift for memorable melodies, rich harmonies, and his deep connection to the jazz tradition.

One of the most sought-after collaborators on the global jazz scene today, guitarist Tim Jago began his music journey in Perth, Western Australia, and was quickly deemed a rising talent by the stalwarts of the Australian jazz scene. He relocated to the U.S. in 2010 and has since performed with a host of world-class musicians, including Terence Blanchard Chick Corea, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts, Bobby McFerrin, and Arturo Sandoval, to name a few. Tim was also a finalist in the inaugural Wes Montgomery International Guitar Competition in 2015. Having co-led and collaborated on many releases over the last fifteen years, “Time Shift” marks the debut album released under his own name.

Also this week, Something Blue continues the 30^th anniversary celebration of Posi-Tone Records by reinterpreting compositions harkening back to the label’s beginning with “In the Beginning”; the Chicago jazz scene is represented with pianist Paul Hecht’s new quartet session, “Pyrography”; and after workshopping his compositions at various New York venues, pianist Tyler Henderson recorded “Love Endures,” his debut album, for Cory Weeds’ Cellar Records label in Vancouver.
