Where The Rubber Hits The Road

You’ve heard a lot from us over the past few months about federal funding and the budget gap KCCK now has after the elimination of CPB. We’re so grateful for the response of our community. At Jazz Under the Stars, gifts were four times our normal average! If you have made an extra donation in response to the funding rescission, thank you so much!

But now reality sets in. The $140,000 dollars taken away from us is not a one-time event, but are funds we will have to raise every year just to stay even, let alone allow for inflation and increased costs. We’re in uncharted territory. Like the music we love, we have to improvise as we look for solutions.

DONATE TO KCCK

Heading into our fall fund drive, I am asking each member of our community who is able, to increase their annual donation. How much is up to you but if you’re a sustainer, please consider increasing your monthly gift by 5 dollars. Many members have pledged to increase their giving by 20%, the approximate percentage of KCCK’s budget that federal funds formerly provided. For a $120 annual gift, that would mean an extra $25.

If you increase, or are a new donor this fall, we’ll send you our “Heroes of Jazz” t-shirt. This limited edition wearable is exclusive to KCCK members, and won’t be sold to the public. It will be a visible reminder to everyone that just like Miles, Louis, and Duke, you are a Hero of Jazz when you give to KCCK.

If you believe KCCK makes our community more vibrant, inspires our youth, and is a dependable companion during these tough times, then show your support with a contribution today. We’re optimistic about the future, a tomorrow powered by you.

New Music Monday for September 22, 2025

Listen to this week’s playlist on YouTube and Spotify
The Birdland Big Band
is a dynamic sixteen-piece jazz orchestra rooted in the classic tradition of Count Basie and Thad Jones, yet boldly pushing the sound of the big band into modern territory. Under the direction of alto saxophonist and educator David DeJesus, the ensemble holds court every Friday evening at the world-famous Birdland Jazz Club in the heart of midtown Manhattan. In recent years, the group has turned its creative focus toward cultivating a new book of original music, featuring arrangements by band members and collaborators. With “Storybook—the Music of Mark Miller,” the band offers its most focused vision yet: a full-length album dedicated to the voice of a single composer and arranger—their longtime lead trombonist Mark Miller.

Trombonist, composer and bandleader Nick Finzer is proud to announce the release of his first full-length big band album, “The Jazz Orchestra Volume 1.” Featuring an all-star lineup of New York’s finest rising star jazz musicians, the album pays tribute to the rich history of the jazz orchestra while offering a fresh, contemporary voice in the large ensemble tradition. The recording is a product of the post-pandemic era, captured in a fast-paced single day setting in 2022 that captured the raw energy and spontaneity of the music.

Also this week, pianist and composer Michael Wolff looked to beat-making and looping software to help him write new music, which he then arranged for his talented and dedicated trio, featuring bassist Ben Allison and drummer Allan Mednard, on the new disc, “Sunny Day”; pianist Brad Mehldau features his take on the music of the late American singer and songwriter Elliott Smith on “Ride Into the Sun”; and pianist and composer Paul Cornish, a product of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz and a member of Joshua Redman’s newest quartet, makes his recording debut with “You’re Exaggerating.”
