New Music Monday for April 20, 2020

    Listen to this week’s playlist on YouTube and Spotify
 The dynamic young saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin presents “Pursuance: The Coltranes,” paying homage to two of the greatest musical innovators of the 20th century, John and Alice Coltrane. Under the tutelage of jazz luminary and co-producer Reggie Workman, whose supple bass lines underscored countless of the Coltranes’ recordings, Benjamin assembled an astonishing cross-generational ensemble of over 40 jazz heavyweights for the project including Ron Carter, Gary Bartz, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Regina Carter, Jazzmeia Horn, Marc Cary, Steve Wilson, Keyon Harold and Marcus Gilmore.

 “Joy” documents the inspired collaborations saxophonist and composer Benjamin Boone experienced while living in Ghana for a year as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar. He performed frequently with the Accra-based Ghana Jazz Collective, and the disc was recorded in his final week in country. Bathed in joy, exuberance and dance, the band tackles four Boone originals along with tunes by Herbie Hancock, Gerry Niewood, and Ethopia-based saxophonist Jonovan Cooper.

Also this week, saxophonist, composer and Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Northern Iowa Chris Merz offers up the second release of Christopher’s Very Happy Band, “While We Wait”;

the charismatic tenor saxophonist and composer Jan Harbeck, long a presence on the Denmark jazz scene, gathers his steady band of many years for “The Sound of Rhythm”;

 and singer Kandace Springs, who was mentored by Prince, pays tribute to the female vocalists who most impacted her music, stylings and journey with “The Women Who Raised Me.

The two rivers that border Iowa are among the nation’s most endangered.

Corridor Jazz Guest DJs – Lisbon

Emma Bock and Renae Hasselbusch have been friends since they were little, and are finishing up their senior year at Lisbon. And they independently decided to attend Iowa State and major in Biology, so they’ll continue to be classmates in college!

The Lisbon Jazz Band has had a great year under first-year director Joseph Arch, making the Iowa Jazz Championships. During their guest DJ hour, they talk about how the band is a group of tight-knit friends, due to the fact that as a small district, they’ve been playing together since middle school. And they reveal which Mingus tune became the band’s informal theme!

Culture Crawl 564 “Virtual Walk-Through”

Gilded Pear Gallery isn’t letting the pandemic keep them from opening a new exhibition. John Beckelman’s show “Stillness and Occurrence” begins April 17th and runs through May 30. The gallery’s traditional opening reception has been moved to a closing event, scheduled for May 22.

The show combines John’s paintings and unfired clay work, and you can look at them all in a virtual gallery at www.gildedpeargallery.com.

Corridor Jazz Guest DJs – Jefferson

Maddie Miller and Shannon Morgan miss a lot about band while they’re on “pandemic break” but it’s possible that getting to school for a 6:50am jazz band rehearsal isn’t one of them. They picked several charts that they played in band to share with us, along with one that was a definite first, “Oogie Boogie’s Song” from “The Nightmare Before Christmas!”
