The Short List: Cats On the Keys 3 (Ralph Sutton)

Ralph Sutton

Ralph Sutton

This summer we revisit the popular “Cats on the Keys” series 3 beginning with Ralph Sutton. Ralph Sutton was one of the few latter day expert practitioners of the Harlem stride style. There is nothing so bracing in jazz as a great “two-handed” pianist tickling the ivories on a great standard and Sutton was the premier example of this kind of jazzman. Writer-critic Ralph Gleason said “Sutton plays with both hands and ten fingers, a full harmonic sense and a delightful wit.”

Champion Jack Dupree

Champion Jack Dupree: Pieces of The Puzzle Part One

The story of New Orleans boogie-woogie piano player Champion Jack Dupree is hard to track down – there’s no biography, and the twists and turns of his life took him all over the world. Orphaned as an infant, he taught himself piano in the Waif’s Home, and went on to play barrelhouse piano alongside some of the greats of the 1920s and 1930s. And then he became a championship boxer. And then he was a prisoner of war in the Pacific for two years. And only then did he became a successful recording artist — but he then left America for Europe, not returning for over thirty years. The facts of his life are scattered — in archived papers and recordings, and in the memories of those who knew him or saw him perform. In this episode, part one of this special two-part program of New Orleans Calling, we go searching for pieces of the puzzle, to try to figure out who Champion Jack Dupree really was.

Dan Moore Trio at Jazz Under the Stars 2015

To get you pumped-up for another exciting season of free summer concerts next month, we’ll revisit all four of our awesome Jazz Under the Stars performances from last August!

Dan Moore is an internationally known musician, composer, and educator. Dr. Moore is professor of music and associate director of the University of Iowa School of Music. As head of Iowa Percussion, he has created a student-centric program that encompasses contemporary chamber music, concert percussion, electronic music, steel band, traditional Chinese drumming and other ethnic music, and improvisation. He travels the globe exploring the many expressive capabilities of percussion. His distinctive brand of improvisational music ranges from classic jazz to experimental music in acoustic and electronic settings. Dan has recorded three CDs while at the U. of I. and describes his Innova Records release: “Misfit Toys: Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is” (2013) “…as surreal wiseacre jazz version of MOR pop.”

It’s no secret that the Branford Marsalis Quartet can be as freewheeling off the bandstand as in performance. The saxophonist and his ensemble, made up of pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Justin Faulkner, are each bold personalities with strong opinions, equally intense in both musical and verbal exchanges. One of these exchanges led to “Upward Spiral,” their new disc featuring special guest Kurt Elling. “One topic we got into was picking the best singer to work with our band,” Marsalis recalls. “My candidate was Kurt Elling, because he has the most flexible voice around, it is always in tune and he is a true jazz musician.” What has emerged, after an intense week of performances and recording in New Orleans, is a collection that blends Songbook staples, jazz standards, and standards-to-be from a diverse array of composers.

album-imageAllen Toussaint’s work as composer, producer, arranger and performer, especially in the 1960s and ‘70s, helped shape the sound of R&B, soul and funk as we know it today. He collaborated memorably with artists ranging from Lee Dorsey to Ernie K. Doe to the Pointer Sisters and Labelle, from the Meters to Dr. John to the Band and Paul McCartney. The New Orleans legend had just completed his new album, “American Tunes,” when he passed away last November during a European tour. Recording took place at two sets of sessions: solo piano in New Orleans in 2013, and with the rhythm section of Jay Bellerose and David Piltch—joined by guests Bill Frisell and Charles Lloyd—in Los Angeles in 2015. The disc comprises solo performances of Professor Longhair tunes and band arrangements of songs by Toussaint, Ellington, Fats Waller, Paul Simon and others.

Sachal Vasandani at the 2013 Iowa City Jazz Festival

The Short List this week brings you a new voice—one in the making during the last decade. It is the instrument of Sachal Vasandani who can croon with the best of them, but chooses to push the boundaries between jazz and pop. Sachal comes from a home where a variety of music was played, including traditional music of India. His 2015 album Slow Motion Miracles features original songs and electronic effects that might appeal to a contemporary audience, though he has done the big band thing and worked with Wynton Marsalis, Chris Botti and Bobby McFerrin.

The Second Year: Mentors and Students

Donald Harrison Jr.

Donald Harrison Jr.

In this special episode of NEW ORLEANS CALLING, we celebrate our second year on the air with a look back at some highlights from the last twelve months.

A theme that kept appearing all this year in host George Ingmire’s interviews has been the special relationship between teachers and students in New Orleans music – and for this program we’ve drawn together the stories of a number of different musicians, connected through the bonds of mentorship. Alvin Batiste, Harold Battiste, Donald Harrison Jr, and Gregory Agid are all examples of this powerful tradition in Crescent City culture.
