New Music Monday for November 4, 2024

Already hailed by NPR’s “Youngbloods” series as a star in the making, alto saxophonist Sarah Hanahan has put her name on the map by performing and touring with renowned musicians including Peter Martin, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Joe Farnsworth, Steve Davis, and the Grammy Award-winning Mingus Big Band. Now with the release of her debut album, “Among Giants,” Hanahan shares her own voice as a young star revolutionizing the genre, working with all-stars Marc Cary on piano, Nat Reeves on bass and Jeff “Tain” Watts on drums.

The Carn Davidson 9 was formed in 2010 as a collaborative project between Juno Award-winning artists, trombonist William Carn and saxophonist Tara Davidson. This co-led ensemble is an opportunity for both artists to craft their original compositions for this chamber jazz instrumentation, including seven wind instruments underpinned by acoustic bass and drums. Their fourth studio album, “Reverence,” presents two new suites of music from the co-leaders that pay tribute to some of their musical heroes and heroines.

Also this week, “Awakening” is the long-awaited debut for Chicago-based bassist and composer Andrew Vogt featuring a handful of the Windy City’s heavy hitters; after a long career as a psychologist, full-time professor, and part-time musician, trumpet player, pianist and composer Dr. Tom Johnson is finally releasing his debut album, “Time Takes Odd Turns”; and Grammy-winning, Puerto Rican-born saxophonist and composer Miguel Zenon charts the history of San Francisco with “Golden City.”

KCCK’s Featured Album for November 2024

The KCCK Featured Album for November is “A Little Taste” from Rebecca Kilgore. The celebrated vocalist honors her good friend and colleague Dave Frishberg, who passed away in 2021, focusing on a program of his songs along with his collaborations with Johnny Hodges, Johnny Mandel and Alan Broadbent. Sadly, Ms. Kilgore was diagnosed with dementia earlier this year and has now retired from performing, making this her final documented recording. “A Little Taste: A Tribute to Dave Frishberg” is on Cherry Pie Records. Culture Crawl 989 “That One Line”

There’s one line in “A Few Good Men” that everyone knows, even if they never saw the Jack Nicholson/Tom Cruise/Demi Moore film. But the movie started as a Broadway play, one of the early works by celebrated writer/producer Aaron Sorkin, who went on to make legendary projects like The West Wing.

Scot Hughes does double duty in the RHCR Theatre production, directing and playing Col. Jessep ( who says That One Line). Grant Blades plays the young lieutenant charged with finding “the truth” behind the hazing death of a Marine at Guantanamo Base.

Nov. 1-3 and 8-10 at CSPS in Cedar Rapids. Tickets and info at www.rhcrtheatre.com.
