English bandleader Ivy Benson had several jobs with early all-female ensembles before she formed her own band in 1939. She would become a BBC studio orchestra and have a long tenure at the London Palladium with her “All-Girls Orchestra.” Benson and her big band endured into the 1980’s.

KCCK’s Wednesday Night Special continues its celebration of Black History Month with another great live set from the 2018 Iowa City Jazz Festival. Veteran reedman Vincent Herring has worked with some of the premier talents in jazz, including Art Blakey, Horace Silver, and Freddie Hubbard. He’s played with Wynton Marsalis at Lincoln Center, and joined John Faddis at Carnegie Hall. Last year, he stepped on to the ICJF stage and played an amazing set that was full of energy and swing.
