Birdland in NYC
The Short List series begins programs on the more famous jazz clubs, both past and present. The first segments are about Birdland in New York City. The neon sign said “The Jazz Corner of the World” and the awning still does. The original Birdland club was organized and opened in December 1949 and named to associate the place with the high-flying jazz artist, Charlie Parker. For a time he would be their main headliner. There were three versions of the club over the years before it finally closed in the mid-1960s. Aside from Bird, all the great players of three decades appeared there.

Craig presents the third and final installment of his chronological look back at Blue Note Records 50 years ago (1967). We’ll hear from exciting, but relatively obscure sessions by Jackie McLean, McCoy Tyner, Duke Pearson, Tyrone Washington, Hank Mobley, and several others. Don’t miss this interesting array of gems from the ever-changing jazz scene of the late 1960s!!

Night Lights, is a weekly one-hour jazz radio program hosted by David Brent Johnson, focusing on jazz from the 1945-1990 era—covering artists such as Jackie McLean, Charles Mingus, and Nina Simone and themes ranging from jazz recordings of spirituals to avant-garde interpretations of the Great American Songbook. Night Lights also features many lesser-known talents of post-1945 jazz. Every program is archived after broadcast for online listening. This week: “Shorter Lee: Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter”.

In anticipation of another season of free Thursday night concerts in August at KCCK’s Jazz Under the Stars, we revisit one of those delightful performances from last summer’s concert series. A downpour forced our 2nd scheduled Jazz Under the Stars concert of the 2016 season indoors at Parlor City Pub in Cedar Rapids, but that didn’t put a damper on the area’s newest band from playing their own unique brand of high energy Fusion-Celtic-Funk, or keep the crowd from groovin’ to the music. Mirage, led by violinist and long-time area educator Natalie Brown, plays a lot of Jean-Luc Ponty – classics such as New Country, Mirage, Enigmatic Ocean, Infinite Pursuit and Ponty collaborations with Frank Zappa and Mahavishnu Orchestra. Mirage also performs Ponty influenced fusion, jazzy funk, and their own, original creations! In addition to Natalie, the band features Ryan Phelan – guitar, vocals Luke Viertel, – keys, vocals, Richard Wagor – bass and Matthew Bernemann – drums. David Murray is known as one of New York’s most monstrously talented and astoundingly prolific artists — a tenor saxophonist who played and wrote for just about every imaginable context. Hear highlights from two different David Murray concerts. We have re-edited this program to remember the late, great pianist Geri Allen, who passed away June 27th at the age of 60, and feature performances of her’s not originally heard in the initial broadcast.

Indra Rios-Moore’s story begins on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, continues across the Atlantic in Denmark, but as yet has not come close to reaching a climax, or thankfully an ending. Like every good story it has had twists along the way, ups, as well as downs, joy and pain, but also sacrifice and success. If art reflects life then it is little wonder that Indra’s album, Heartland is eclecticism in the extreme… it is an album that is both intensely personal but also broad in it’s musical sweep. Hardly surprising given Indra’s story.
