KCCK’s Jazz Band Camp is an introduction to jazz band designed expressly for a middle schooler’s age and experience. It’s an excellent way to prepare for high school band, whether or not a student plays a traditional jazz band instrument.

Jazz Band Camp:

  • Introduces students to playing jazz, both in ensemble and combo configurations
  • Enhances their middle school band experience and prepares them for high school jazz band.
  • Give students the opportunity to learn from, and play alongside jazz teachers and educators, as well as professional musicians from the community.

The camp is led by experienced faculty, whose teaching experience ranges from middle school to college. Sessions are offered for brass, woodwinds, and rhythm section – in theory, improvisation,  combo, and sectionals. The camp is held at Kirkwood Community College.

Jazz band camp is offered in half-day sessions. Campers choose a week-long morning or afternoon camp session on the Kirkwood College campus in Cedar Rapids. Camp half days include jazz combo rehearsals, jazz theory/history classes, master classes, and faculty combo performances.

Register for either the Morning (8:30am-Noon) or Afternoon (1:00pm -4:30pm) session. Maximum 36 students per session. Camp is open to any band student entering grades six through nine with at least one year of band instruction or private lessons. Ages 9-15.  Click here for the Jazz Camp FAQ’s.

Tuition is $225 (for morning or afternoon session) and includes all classes, teaching materials, a daily snack, a Jazz Camp T-Shirt and water bottle.  Scholarships are awarded to students who would not otherwise be able to attend camp without tuition help.  Click here for jazz camp scholarship information.

After registering:

  • You will be emailed a form to complete online, which will include details on audition materials, and other helpful information.  This will assist us in setting up curriculum and orient faculty.
  • On the first day of camp, students will audition for one of the teachers. The function of the audition is to help us find out what skills students already have, and which skills we can work on at camp. It will also help us assign music that is the proper level for campers. So there’s nothing to be nervous about – just show us what you can do!
  • Print off and practice the audition piece for your instrument. If you intend to play more than one instrument at camp, print and practice each piece. Here is the link for audition materials.
