Culture Crawl 847 “Don’t Let The Smooth Taste Fool You”

Saxophonist and UI jazz department head Damani Phillips was entranced with the music of Spyro Gyra from the first moment he heard their pop hit “Morning Dance.” And in the 40+ years since, he has continued to appreciate the depth and texture behind the band’s deceptively approachable music. Damani has teamed up with fellow UI professor Dan Moore on the vibes, along with Tim Crumley, drums; and Steve Charlton, bass; to form “Road Scholars,” a band that pays tribute to Spyro Gyra.

Road Scholars headlines Week 3 of Jazz Under the Stars, August 17 at Neoridge Park. Opening Young Artist Ensemble will be The Harlan Combo, winner of the UI Combo Contest this past winner, all the way from Southwest Iowa. And as if that wasn’t enough, this is also the week of KCCK’s Album and CD sale. Thousands of vintage recordings on sale beginning at just $1 a disk.

Keep up with Damani online at www.damaniphillips.com. More info on Jazz Under the Stars at www.kcck.org/juts.
