Host Craig Kessler presents the creme de la creme, culled from over 50 releases, featuring the incredible guitar of the late John Abercrombie. Over half of these ECM records feature Abercrombie as a leader, while 25 more include Abercrombie as a sideman with the likes of Dave Liebman, Jan Hammer, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette, Enrico Rava, and many others.

Mike Conrad’s Colossus at JUTS 2014

2023’s Jazz Under the Stars opened with bandleader Mike Conrad and the Jazz Composers Orchestra. This week’s Wednesday Night Special features one Conrad’s earlier projects – the 2014 performance of Colossus. True to form, Conrad spotlights original compositions from his fellow bandmates.

Culture Crawl 843 “There Are Not”

Is the answer to the question “Are there a lot of arrangements for concert band featuring bagpipe? So for the final Cedar Rapids Municipal Band concert of the year, director Steve Shanley wrote one that features bagpipist Stuart Barr. Steve promises you’ll recognize a few traditional Scottish melodies in the tunes.

Also on the program will be Young Artist finalist Charlotte Ottemoeller from Kennedy, and music from the musical, “Annie.”

KCCK’s Featured Album for August 2023

The KCCK Featured Album for August is “With Peter Bradley” by Javon Jackson. The saxophonist has created the soundtrack and original score for a new documentary on the abstract artist, who has been undersung in the art world despite a prolific 50-year career. Bradley’s work is linked with his love of jazz, which provides the atmosphere and inspiration for all of his paintings. Jackson was the ideal choice for the project, first meeting the artist during his tenure with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, and the two have become longtime friends. “With Peter Bradley” is from Solid Jackson Records.
