Culture Crawl 978 “You Can’t Have a Pony!”

Like many children, Carole Gauger asked her parents for a pony. But unlike most of us, she never quit asking. And saved her babysitting money until she was able to purchase a horse on her own.

This led Carole to become one of the country’s leading horse trainer and breeders. She also played a leading role in breeding Lipazzan horses in the U.S. and founded the U.S. Lipazzan Registry, which now has more than a thousand entries.

Carole tells the story of her life through the many horses she has owned, trained, and loved in her memoir “Livery to Lipazzans,” available now at Prairie Lights and on Amazon.

Carole is a member of The Guild Writers Group, which meets at the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library. The Guild welcomes new members anytime. Contact the Museum to find out the meeting schedule.

Culture Crawl 975 “Preaching to the Choir”

Artist John Paul Schafer recently joined Chorale Midwest, and the experience has inspired him to create a mixed-media series, Seasons of Song, featuring birds representing the four seasons. When the art is sold, John will share the proceeds with the Chorale.

The Chorale kicks off its season with Sending Love, Joy, and Peace Through Song this Sunday, October 2nd, at 2:30 PM at Christ Episcopal Church. On the program will be Dan Forrest’s Requiem for the Living. John’s art will also be on display.

New Music Monday for October 7, 2024

Listen to this week’s playlist on YouTube and Spotify

Joel Frahm is celebrated as a modern icon of the tenor saxophone, known for his emotional projection and technical prowess. His career spans collaborations with leading jazz musicians such as Brad Mehldau, Matt Wilson, Jane Monheit, and Ari Hoenig, solidifying his status as one of the most important and exiting players of our time. The Joel Frahm Trio, featuring bassist Dan Loomis and Canadian drummer Ernesto Cervini, has been performing together for nearly a decade. Their synergy and musical camaraderie are evident on every track of their second album, “Lumination.”

Before embarking on a career in jazz, Leslie Pintchik earned a Master of Philosophy degree in seventeenth-century English literature from Columbia University. She first surfaced on the Manhattan jazz scene in a trio with legendary bassist Red Mitchell at Bradley’s, and in the ensuing years Pintchik formed her own trio which performs regularly at New York City and East Coast jazz venues. Her new album, “Prayer for What Remains,” showcases her gifts as pianist, composer and arranger, and features eight of her original tunes.

Also this week, four-time Juno Award winner and esteemed Canadian bassist Neil Swainson returns with an incredible sextet and nine original tunes on “Here for a While”; Chicago-based trumpeter Eric Jacobson’s eight original tunes provide the perfect vehicle for his warmth-under-fire playing on “Heading Home”; and Canadian singer, songwriter and arranger Caity Gyorgy is accompanied by her regular piano trio on her new disc, “Hello! How Are You?”
